UK sales of Magners slump by nearly a quarterUK sales of Magners slump by nearly a quarter
Weak consumer demand and strong competition cited as factors in third quarter decline
UK sales of Magners cider slumped 24 per cent year-on-year in the three months to the end of November last year.
C&C Group, which produces the brand in Ireland, said the group’s overall revenue fell 13 per cent on the same period in 2007, with its cider division seeing sales down 19 per cent.
The UK decline was accompanied by a 17 per cent fall in cider sales in Ireland.
“The performance reflects very weak consumer demand, declining price yield, increased off-trade profile and strong competition in both markets,” the group said.
Trading since the end of November last year had followed a similar pattern, C&C revealed, with the traditionally weaker months of January and February expected to continue this trend.
Subsequently the group said it expected to post full year profits of €90m (£88m), down from €125m in 2007.
