Black Sheep MD responds to celeb pair's slating on TV show
Black Sheep managing director Paul Theakston has hit back following an episode of TV show Risky Business in which celebrity pair Neil Morrissey and Richard Fox appear to ignore his advice on brewing.
In Episode one of the show, broadcast last Tuesday, Men Behaving badly actor Morrissey and TV chef Fox have a meeting with brewing legend Theakston in which they discuss the viability of them opening a micro brewery. With the premise of Risky Business being Morrissey and Fox opening a pub, Theakston advised them to give up on the idea of an unprofitable “brewery bolt-on” and to source beer through conventional channels.
They ignored the advice, and in a piece to camera, Morrissey appeared to discount his views as those of just one man. He also labelled most licensees whose pubs closed “stupid”.
Theakston – who, at the time of speaking, had not seen the broadcast – said: “I guessed they were interested at the time. Whether they take any notice is another matter. They are entitled to their opinion and I am entitled to mine.
“Start-up micro breweries are unlikely to work anymore. The concept has lost its freshness.”
The second episode of Risky Business is due to be broadcast on Channel 4 tonight.
