Stolen beer kegs recovered in police raidStolen beer kegs recovered in police raid
Record scrap metal haul includes kegs
Beer kegs were among material taken away from a scrap yard in the Midlands following what police described as “Britain’s biggest ever seizure of suspected stolen metal”.
The raid, carried out under Operation Amalgam by British Transport Police and Staffordshire Police, also netted more than 350 tonnes of stolen railtrack, cabling and fencing at the site in Cheadle. The total value of the haul is believed to be more than £700,000.
Stolen and lost beer kegs are currently estimated to cost the brewing industry more than £60m a year – a cost which is often passed all the way down to the licensee.
Chief inspector Simon Tweats of Staffordshire Police said: “Efforts will now be made to reunite the property with its owners.
“Operation Amalgam is determined to address local issues by targeting those involved in metal theft – including people who receive stolen goods.”
A 43-year-old man arrested during the operation has been released on police bail until December, pending further enquiries.
