Council body finds cities in the North better placed to ride out economic downturn
Cities in the North of England are likely to fare better in the recession than London and the South East, according to research published today.
In a report that will be anything but music to the ears of those pub companies operating exclusively in the capital and Home Counties, the Local Government Association (LGA) said the recent growth of Northern English cities had placed them “relatively well to cope with the effects of the recession”.
Conversely the LGA, which represents local councils in England, said that two out of five jobs at risk in the next two years were located in London and the South East.
“The recession is going to hit different parts of the country in very different ways,” said Councillor Margaret Eaton, the LGA’s chairman.
Even within individual regions there are marked differences as to how local areas could fare.
“It is clear that a national, one-size-fits-all approach to dealing with the recession simply isn’t going to work,” she added.
More decisions needed to be taken at local level, Eaton went on.
“This means councils continuing to work with local people and businesses,” she said.
Two of London’s largest pub operators, Young & Co and Fuller, Smith & Turner announce sets of results this week, while Capital Pub Company recently reported that trading was "resilient", if tough.
