Licensee to serve own ale to MPs

Brewed beer will be showcased at Westminster

A licensee will serve his own brewed beer to MPs and peers at the House of Parliament bar next week.

Giles Hawkins started making beer in a microbrewery at the back of Albert’s Inn in Totnes, Devon, when he began running the freehouse a year ago.

After brewing more than 30,000 pints, Giles asked his local MP Anthony Steen whether he could serve the beer, known as Albert Ale, in the government buildings.

He said: “Some of the more senior locals in our back bar have been fondly known as the Bridgetown Parliament for many years for holding court and thrashing out the issues of the day over a pint or two of their favourite ale. It struck me as fitting to try and get our beer served in the real Parliament."

Giles uses locally-sourced ingredients to make the beer and brews an average of 70 gallons per week.

The beer will be showcased in the bar on the 28 January.
