Milestone unveiling taking place in Barnsley
Managed pub chain JD Wetherspoon is today opening its 700th pub – the Silkstone Inn in Barnsley.
Turning the former Co-Op supermarket site into the pub, which is to be opened by Wetherspoon’s chief operating officer Paul Harbottle, cost the group £1.2m.
The pub’s name refers to the silkstone coal seams mined in the coal fields of South Yorkshire, and 40 jobs have been created at the venue, which is managed by Andrew Ibbotson.
Paul Harbottle said: “We are delighted to have opened our 700th pub and are looking forward to opening many more pubs in the coming months and years.”
The milestone opening is part of plan to open a further seven new sites before the end of 2008, as well as conversions of two existing licensed premises.
The new pubs will be in Glasgow airport; Chester; Nottingham; Mexborough, near Doncaster; Colne, near Birmingham; Bodmin, and Thirsk. Total investment in these sites is expected to be in the region of £10m.
