Global brewing giant sees volumes slide as market tightens
Brewing giant InBev has revealed that its beer volumes in the UK fell by more than five per cent in the last quarter.
Despite the brewer claiming to have gained market share in the UK, thanks in part to a new lower strength version of its Stella Artois brand, it reported that beer volumes dipped 5.3 per cent in the UK in the three months to September 2008.
“Domestic volume declines are in line with the declines in the domestic industry,” the group said.
“We have successfully launched a new version of Stella Artois, which is per cent alcohol by volume and is branded “Stella Artois 4%”.
Figures from the BBPA have shown that UK on-trade beer sales dropped 8.1 per cent between July and September year-on-year, showing the scale of the problems faced by InBev and its rival brewers.
Globally, InBev said its decision to put greater focus on and investment in a fewer number of brands had “produced encouraging results”.
“Year to date (to September 2008), these brands have significantly outperformed total own beer sales, with volume growth of 4.4 per cent,” the brewer said.
“Recent examples are Stella Artois in the US, Beck’s in Germany, Cass in South Korea, Budweiser and Bud Light in Canada, and Quilmes and Stella Artois in Argentina.
