Research by No Smoking Day campaign says 20 per cent will quit when ban comes into force
One in five smokers say that they will try to, or definitely stop smoking when the ban comes into force on July 1.
No Smoking Day, the charity behind today's campaign, commissioned a YouGov survey on public awareness of the incoming ban on smoking in enclosed public places and workplaces.
The survey showed that 20 per cent of smokers plan to make an attempt to quit as England goes smoke-free.
Ben Youdan, chief executive of No Smoking Day, said: '"No Smoking Day is the ideal opportunity to stop smoking before Smokefree comes into place this summer. More than two-thirds of smokers say they want to quit smoking and should seek advice and support from stop smoking services to do that."
"This could be one of the biggest changes in public health in decades and we need to be ready to give all these smokers the help and support they need to quit.
"This year £56 million has been spent on NHS stop smoking services who are expecting their busiest ever year."
The research which was conducted online consulted 2,260 adults from February 16 to 19.
